A rating of 6.7/10 by IMDb and 55% by Rotten Tomatoes is pretty low in my opinion but I'll admit—I'm completely biased when it comes to The Lion King. It's been a favorite of mine since childhood, and this prequel only enhances Mufasa's already legendary story, making it feel even grander and more extraordinary than it ever did before. There's something about his strength, wisdom, and undeniable presence that makes him unforgettable. But as much as I admire him, the underlying drama with his brother Taka (yes, Scar before the name change) adds a layer of heartbreak to this iconic tale.
Watching the CGI remake brought the story to life in a whole new way, with visuals that captivate and awe anyone who lays eyes on them. Despite the stunning visuals, I found it hard to associate the voices with the CGI animals, as their lifelike appearance made the vocal performances feel somewhat disconnected.
Additionally, as the story unfolded, I found myself caught in the emotional tug-of-war between Mufasa and Taka. Taka's bitterness stems from years of living in his brother's shadow, made worse by Sarabi's choice to be with Mufasa. Can you blame him for feeling betrayed? There's no denying the tragedy of his transformation into Scar. Regardless, the root of his pain makes him such a compelling character whose essence is felt in the entire story. Still, my heart belongs to Mufasa. His bond with Sarabi is such a grounding force in the story, a perfect mix of love and leadership. Together, they embody the wisdom and care that make Pride Rock flourish.
For me, though, Mufasa's legacy stands tall. His unwavering love and guidance still echo through Simba in his journey and also as Kiara's father even after he's gone and for that reason this movie is definitely a good choice.
