Over the years, I have noticed that people tend to prefer the first movie in a franchise over any that follows, and I agree with that sentiment. There's something special about the first film—producers put everything into it, creating something fresh and exciting. But with sequels, it often feels like the magic gets lost. Either the filmmakers don't deliver as well, or they try to do too much and end up making the story feel complicated and less impactful. This is true for a lot of the sequels released in 2024. Even with high hopes, some of these films just can't live up to the original. Whether it's missing the same charm, changing the tone, or losing the emotional depth, the sequels often feel like they fall short. Audiences end up wishing they could go back to the simplicity and power of the first movie.

The worst sequel of all is Joker: Folie à Deux. This sequel had the toughest road ahead. Following the massive success of the first Joker film (2019) praised for its dark, intense take on the character, the sequel took a very different direction by introducing musical elements. This bold choice raised concerns among fans, who may not have wanted a musical twist in such a dark tale. A recent study into 2024's pop culture reveals that as of November 30, Joker: Folie à Deux grossed only $58.3 million domestically and $206.4 million worldwide, a significant drop compared to its predecessor, which earned $335.5 million domestically and $743.5 million internationally. The pressure to create a film that honors the original's tone while embracing an entirely new genre proved difficult, and ultimately, the film struggled to connect with audiences.

Although I was hesitant to include Inside Out 2 due to personal bias, it's a perfect example. The original film was a clever and emotional exploration of a young girl's mind, and it resonated with both children and adults. The sequel did have its moments, and I can't deny that I still loved it, but in my opinion, there was a bit too much going on, especially towards the end. At times, I felt a little overwhelmed by the actions of some of the emotions, which could very well have been the point of the movie. Still, for me, the first film just did it better.  It was more balanced, and it left a lasting impact in a way the sequel couldn't quite match.

Gladiator 2, on the other hand, has the challenge of living up to its iconic classic. The original Gladiator was beloved for its emotional depth, intense action, and unforgettable performances, particularly by Russell Crowe as Maximus. With the sequel, much of the magic lay in the legacy of his character, and without him, Gladiator 2 risked losing that emotional connection. The pressure was on to create something equally compelling, but fans struggled to embrace new characters or a different focus, especially after waiting over 20 years for a follow-up. While the sequel had the potential to expand the story, the absence of Maximus left a significant void, and many fans found themselves missing the raw intensity and power that made the original film so memorable.

In conclusion, while sequels may offer new directions, many of the 2024 releases struggled to capture the magic of their predecessors, leaving fans yearning for the charm and impact of the original films.
