It's not easy getting authentic Swahili dishes in a city replete with nyama choma and fried tilapia joints. The Nairobi Serena Hotel seeks to remedy this and you don't have to travel to the Kenyan coast to indulge in Swahili culinary delights.
Swahili Night, held twice a year, is a celebration of Swahili culture with traditional food, music, and attire. Swahili cuisine, known for its rich use of spices and influences from African, Indian, and Middle Eastern cooking is a decadence everyone should enjoy once in a while. Dishes like coconut rice, samosas, seafood, and sweets such as Mahamri and Halwa are hallmark features of Swahili food.
Recently, the Nairobi Serena Hotel hosted Swahili Night at Café Maghreb, showcasing live cooking by Swahili women preparing traditional dishes like viazi karai, vitumbua and Biriyani. I really enjoyed the seafood offerings and Madafu (Coconut Water). The event, accompanied by Juma Tutu and the Swahili Jazz Ensemble, aims to preserve Kenya's authentic cultures.
