MTV Shuga Mashariki is making its highly anticipated comeback this May, and this time, the show promises to be more authentic and impactful than ever! The MTV Staying Alive Foundation has partnered with Shujaaz Inc. to tackle gender norms and their impact on Kenyan youth through the Surround Sound Kenya Programme.
Leading the charge are three of Kenya's most celebrated directors: June Ndinya, Mkaiwawi Mwakaba, and Likarion Wainaina. Ndinya, best known for her hit teen dramas like Flash Squad and Prefects, is praised for her fearless storytelling. Mwakaba, co-founder of the African Female Filmmakers Collective, is known for pushing creative boundaries, including co-directing Makosa Ni Yangu (2024). Meanwhile, Wainaina, who wowed audiences with his award-winning feature film Supa Modo, continues to redefine African cinema on the global stage.
Incorporating diverse perspectives is a key theme for this season. "Having two female directors onboard allows us to authentically showcase societal challenges—especially those intersecting with gender—with empathy and depth," explains Mitchelle Kimathi, MTV Staying Alive Foundation's Country Manager for Kenya.
The powerhouse production team is completed by Reuben Odanga, known for creating fan favorites like Selina and Saida, and cinematographer Enos Olik, whose striking visual style has shaped films like Anyango and the Ogre and series such as Crime and Justice. Together, this talented team aims to deliver captivating storytelling, stunning visuals, and culturally rich narratives.
"This season is deeply rooted in Kenyan experiences and realities, driven by research and shaped by local talent," says Wame Jallow, Executive Director of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. "Our goal is to inspire young people to challenge societal norms and take control of their futures."
Set to premiere in May 2025, MTV Shuga Mashariki will continue to spark meaningful conversations about youth issues across Kenya and East Africa. With its legacy of discovering new talent and delivering relatable, socially conscious content, this new season is sure to be one for the books.
