Overview
Jaboya is a gripping theatrical production that confronts the harsh realities of transactional survival along Kenya’s lake regions—where women are often forced into the “fish-for-sex” trade system. Borrowing its name from boya—the floating plastic that keeps fishing nets afloat—the play uses metaphor and raw storytelling to expose a system where women’s bodies have become bargaining chips for basic needs.
But this is not just a story of exploitation. It’s a story of resistance. Jaboya follows the journey of bold women who choose to defy the cycle, reclaim their power, and challenge deeply entrenched norms. Through powerful performances, music, and movement, Jaboya is a rallying cry for dignity, agency, and liberation.
