Unseen Cinema and Sudu Connexion continue their partnership with three arthouse African films scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. This February, in observance of Black History Month, the featured film is "The Sleeping Negro," written and directed by Skinner Myers.
Skinner Myers, an accomplished filmmaker with 11 credits to his name, makes his feature film debut with "The Sleeping Negro." Myers has pursued his education at institutions including Columbia University, Brooklyn College, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and is currently working towards a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam.
The film follows a young Black man grappling with racially charged incidents, striving to reclaim his humanity amidst feelings of anger, alienation, and despair and mirrors the stories of surveilled communities in Kenya (communities under state and police surveillance).
"The Sleeping Negro" premiered at the 2021 Slamdance Film Festival and the Champs-Elysees Film Festival in Paris. It has garnered acclaim, winning awards such as the FIPRESCI award at IFF Mannheim Heidelberg (2021), Best Narrative Feature at FESTIC Burkina Faso (2023), and the Special Jury Award at the Diorama Film Festival in India (2023).
Screening dates at Unseen Nairobi are from Feb 2-6, 9-13, 16-20, and 23-27. Ticket inquiries here.
