Joseph Okwisia interviews UswaziKing for KenyaBuzz.
Hi UswaziKing, I'd love to know more about the musical king of Kwale. Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Bilal Said, popularly known by my stage name UswaziKing. I'm a professional singer and songwriter from Kwale and I started my music career in 2020. I specialize in Bongo Flava, Swahili RNB and Afropop. I have released 11 songs to date with my most recent being the I Miss You remix featuring coastal-based rapper Beast.
It hasn't been an obstacle-free journey, but would you say it has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing comes easy. As the Swahili saying goes, "Unasemaje mwanzo huwa ni mgumu," (It's always hard in the beginning) and this has certainly rang true for me. My parents initially didn't want me to do music, but I've worked hard to make them understand and believe in me. One of the biggest challenges I've faced is the funding of my music projects since it's very expensive to produce and market music projects by yourself. However, I'm thankful that I'm managing.

Are your artistic works receiving the acknowledgement and feedback you feel you deserve?
Yes, I'm grateful to be receiving positive feedback on my work, recognition and, nominations in awards festivals. In 2020, I even won an award in Kwale county for my song Deep in Love, which was voted as the best local song of the year. All in all, I'd say the progress is really good.
Let's talk about your recent track. What can you tell me about "I Miss You"?
I Miss You is one of my songs that talks about my real-life experience. It's something that happened to me. For the remix, I featured a highly talented rapper Beast and the song was produced by Nova Music. It's a special dedication to everyone who misses someone in their life.
What has been the most important lesson you've learned through your musical journey?
Discipline and knowing how to relate with others is key in the music industry, since it requires a lot of networking. Hard work and patience also play a huge part in one's success.
What else should we know about what you do?
I'm currently working on some big projects, from videos and audios to collaborations with renowned artists in the industry. My first EP is also almost ready so keep your eyes open for some amazing jams from your boy UswaziKing!
