Nikolai agreed to get married to Kelly after finding out that they were having a child together. He had refused to do it at first but eventually decided that he wanted to give his child a complete family. He had also accepted that Adele would never reciprocate his feelings because she is his brother's widow.

Adele however realized that she had fallen for Nikolai after she saw him planning his wedding with Kelly. She could not bear to see them together so she decided to move out of the Gonzales mansion. Nikolai was upset about it so he followed Adele to find out why she left. Adele could not hide her feelings any longer so she told Nikolai that she loved him. She however made it clear that she would not have a relationship with him because she did not want them to hurt Kelly. Nikolai would not accept this so he decided to leave without telling anyone.

Kelly found out that the wedding was cancelled after Nikolai went missing. She was furious with Adelle after learning that she had confessed to Nikolai and they ended up fighting with her. The animosity between them caused Nikolai's mother, Madam Isabella, to collapse and she ended up hospitalized. Nikolai had to come back to see her and confront the situation between him, Adele and Kelly.
