Espanyol forward Joselu scored from close range to score a fortunate goal three minutes from the end of the match to send Spain into their second successive UEFA Nations League final in a 2-1 win over Italy on Thursday.
The forward who had been introduced earlier on as a substitute scored after a Rodri's deflected shot to send his team to the Rotterdam final on Sunday giving his team hope to recreate their magic on a bigger stage after a dry spell. Their last major trophy was the 2012 European Championship.
Spain were the first to break the deadlock in the third minute when Yeremy Pino caught Italian legendary defender and captain Leonardo Bonnuci off-guard on the ball outside his box, before taking the ball and beating goalkeeper Gianlugi Donnarruma.
Lazio captain Ciro Immobile equalized for the Italians from the penalty spot to put his name on the score sheet for the Azzuris for the first time in two years after Spaniard defender Robin le Normand handled in the box.
Le Normand, 26, was making his international debut partnering Manchester City center back Aymeric Laporte just a month after gaining his Spanish citizenship after playing and living in Spain for seven years. He plays for Real Sociedad.
Spain were the dominant team in the second half but only lacked a goal to give them a lead and show their superiority. Extra time looked inevitable for both of the teams not until a Rodri shot deflected off two defenders and found Joselu who slotted it home from close range.
Joselu continues a remarkable late career rise with three goals in three games run having just made his international debut March with 33 years of age. He was also the third best topscorer in La Liga just after Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandoski despite his team being relegated.
Spain, who lost in the finals in last years UEFA Nations League edition to France now face Croatia in the finals. Croatia will also be looking to win their countries' first major international trophy.
