Kenyan premier league giants Gor Mahia thumped Nairobi City stars 4-1 to win the 2022/23 FKF premier league title on the final match day of the season. Gor Mahia cemented their status as the best Kenyan premier league team with 20 titles on their name at a fully packed Kasarani stadium on Sunday June 25.
The title however didn't come easily because as far as at half time, while City stars had held Gor Mahia to a barren draw, Tusker FC who were a point below them going into the last game day were leading 2-0 against Vihiga bullets at Mumias complex.
Nairobi city stars was the first team on the score sheet in the 48th minute through the inform Samuel Kapen after a Steve Njuge defensive error but luckily K'ogalo striker Benson Ochieng Omalla restored parity in three minutes later.
Peter Lwasaa gave Gor mahia the lead in the 62nd minute before Afc Leopards academy graduate Austin Odhiambo curled in a beautiful freekick for the lakeside boys ten minutes from time bringing the title close home. Substitute Alpha Onyango wrapped up the goal scoring proceedings of the day for K'ogalo in the dying minutes of the match.
In other games, Afc Leopards beat 10-man Kariobangi sharks through a spot kick converted by Victor Omune at Nyayo national stadium while Bandari emerged triumphant over Posta rangers 2-1 in Mbaraki stadium Mombasa.
At Mumias complex, the match ended 4-0 in favor of Robert Matano's Tusker fc but wasn't enough to grant them the title as they lost with a 1-point margin to Gor Mahia. Deogracious Ojok and Shami Kibwanna gave tusker a 2-nil lead before half time before Stewart Omondi scored a double in the second half to seal their second place.
Kenya police striker Elvis Rupia finished the season as the top scorer with 27 goals while Gor Mahia's Benson Omalla came second with 26 goals. Omalla's teammate Gad Matthews finished as the goalkeeper with most clean sheets tied at 17 clean sheets alongside Nzoia Sugar Fc goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi.
Gor Mahia who received no prize apart from the trophy because of lack of sponsors for the FKF Premier league this season received 1.5 million kenya shillings from their patron former prime minister Raila Odinga and an additional Ksh 3.5 million from their sponsor Sportpesa.
